Main Text

xiii

  • 1Ay me, that Love should Nature's works accuse,
  • 2Where cruel Laura still her beauty views;
  • 3River, or cloudy jet, or crystal bright,
  • 4Are all but servants of her self-delight.
  • 5Yet her deformed thoughts she cannot see;
  • 6And that's the cause she is so stern to me.
  • 7Virtue and duty can no favour gain,
  • 8A grief, O death, to live and love in vain.
