PSALM LVI.

  • Editor’s Note1O Christ, have mercy on thy sheep
  • 2  From man's licentious pow'r;
  • 3Each day the foes thy fence o'erleap
  • 4  To worry and devour.
  • 5Their sweeping swarms in hostile steel
  • 6  he daily skirmish try,
  • 7I therefore to thy name appeal,
  • 8  Most holy and most high.
  • 9Whene'er I find myself dismay'd
  • 10  Which threats at times obtain,
  • 11I will rely for instant aid
  • 12  On Christ betray'd and slain.
  • 13I will the words of Christ adore,
  • 14  Whose voice my faith confirms;
  • 15In him I trust, and dread no more
  • 16  The pow'r of dust and worms.
  • 17They daily from its true intent
  • Editor’s Note18  In craft my language wrest,
  • Editor’s Note19Thoughts misemploy'd, and time mispent,
  • 20  My ruin to suggest.
  • pg 13221Their bands with cowardice extream
  • 22  Assemble and retreat,
  • 23And as against my life they scheme,
  • 24  They mark me by my feet.
  • 25Shall they escape the doom they dread,
  • 26  Who plan their neighbour hurt?
  • 27Yea, Jesu, from their impious head
  • 28  The final doom avert.
  • Editor’s Note29Thou seest the wand'rings of my pray'r
  • 30  From woes I cannot brook,
  • 31Thy phial for my tears prepare
  • 32  And note them in thy book.
  • 33Whene'er thy Saviour I invoke,
  • 34  My foes the siege shall raise;
  • 35For this from heav'n I have bespoke,
  • 36  In Christ my pray'r and praise.
  • 37From Christ the word of life deriv'd,
  • 38  My joyful psalm resounds;
  • 39In Christ the word my soul reviv'd,
  • 40  Her consolation grounds.
  • 41My trust in Jesus I repose,
  • 42  And hence my hope pursue;
  • 43I will not fear my carnal foes,
  • 44  Nor what vain man can do.
  • 45To Christ my solemn vows I owe,
  • 46  My daily debt is great,
  • 47I will my mite of praise bestow,
  • 48  And at thine altar wait.
  • 49My soul from death thy merit clears,
  • 50  My feet are firm and free;
  • 51And to the public view appears
  • 52  My light renew'd in thee.
