Nowhere does Browning pose a problem of conscience with more economy. The plot which is supposed to be offered to him for a play in fact constitutes a perfect short-story.

Each stanza has four lines rhyming abab. The first three lines of each are tetrameters, the fourth being a trimeter. Iambs and anapaests are the feet.
