pg 1244SUBJECT INDEX

Since a complete index of even the names in the edition would not be practical, this index is primarily confined to items from text and notes of four kinds which I expect will be of most use. (1) Identified sources and influences (primarily books, authors, and features of the Bristol landscape): these can give a fair notion of the relative importance of such shaping factors. (2) Recurring names and themes: these aid the student in following the detailed development of, for example, the Rowleyan idea or the political satire. (3) Literary topics, problems, and modes: with these entries one may trace the changes in, for example, C's prosody, poetic structures, or epic and mock-epic styles. (4) The editors and periodicals C was associated with and the pseudonyms used: these help one to trace the development of his career as a literary professional. In such C studies, the heavy cross-referencing in the notes, the Rowleyan glossary, and the maps and map indexes should be used to supplement this index.

Names not significantly recurring (most of those in the 'Account of the De Berghams', for example) are not indexed. Certain names, on the other hand, recur so frequently (Rowley and Bristol, for example) as to render non-selective indexing confusing rather than helpful. And since my own debts to scholars, reference works, and textual sources are acknowledged in the abbreviations list, the introduction, and the notes, they are not indexed here.

The page numbers of the more important passages and notes are italicized.
