Notes

The opening scene of Titus has thirteen adult speaking parts and at least four silent characters (though 'as many as can be' in the stage direction at 1.72 indicates a desire for more). Silent characters will include Alarbus (Scene 1), Senators (Scene 1, 5, 12), Tribunes (Scene 1, 5, 12), Soldiers and Goths (Scene 1, 10, 12), Attendants (Scene 2, 3, 7), Sempronius (Scene 8), Caius (Scene 8, 11), and Valentine (Scene 11). Three further separate speaking Goths seem to be needed (three speak in Scene 10, one speaks in Scene 12, although multiple Goths enter). For doubling purposes they are grouped above as 'Goths'. On the casting chart their speeches (separately 159, 79, 25 words; 0.8%, 0.4%, 0.13%) are combined for simplicity of representation. We have taken 'Romane' (12.175) to be short for 'Roman Lord' but it is not necessarily the same character.

Three boys are required in the final scene.

Parts for whom doubling options are the same have been grouped together. The group containing Aemilius is an unusually large one.

The Folio changes, including particularly the addition of 3.2, do not alter the doubling pattern or the number of required roles.
