What is an Advanced search?

A full search of the entire OSEO collection. It finds your term wherever it occurs in the collection of editions. This could be in an author name, a work title, an edition title, a date or an ISBN, or anywhere in the main text or the editorial text (preface, notes, translation, etc.) of the books.

An Advanced search also allows you to search for multiple terms at the same time.

Running an Advanced search

Here's how to run the simplest search:

1. Open the Advanced search page by clicking  above the Search box at the top right of the page.

2. Click the arrow and select a search area from the drop down menu. The default is Author Name.

3. Type the word or phrase you want to find into the top box.

4. Press Enter or click .

5. The results are displayed in the Results list. To open any of the items in the list, click on it.

Searching for more than one term at once

In an Advanced search you can search for more than one term at once. Two lines of search terms are provided. Click  to open a third search box for a third term. (You can continue to add search boxes to search for more than three terms. To remove a row, click the adjacent .)

Between the input boxes is a list box headed . This is where you select how you want to combine your terms. The options are And, Or, Not.

Choosing a search area

A search area is the specific kind of text (e.g. Author name, Work text) you can choose to search in an Advanced search. You choose your search area from the list box on the left of the search box, which is set to Author Name as the default. (Choose Full Text if you simply want to search the entire text of OSEO.)

Specifying a date

You can specify a specific date or date range for your search, by typing the dates into the date boxes. For example, entering a date range of 1600 to 1700 for Date of composition returns results composed between 1600 and 1700. To enter a single date, enter the same date in both boxes.

Omitting duplicate editions

By default duplicate versions of the same work are omitted from your search. To include them, uncheck the  checkbox.

Choosing a type

By default, the results show all the material that matches your search term. To confine your results to a particular type of text (e.g. essays or letters and diaries) check the appropriate option(s).
