Editor’s Note
1 Thomasina Ross (1794–1875), author and translator: see Vol. iii, p. 353 and n; in 1846 published translations in Bentley's, and of Count Saint-Marie's Algeria in 1845. As the elder sister, with whom CD had been in touch in 1842, the most likely recipient: a family tradition, however, associates the envelope with her sister Georgina (see Vol. i, p. 7n).
