Hon'ble Sirs,

I beg leave to state, in reply to your Letter of the 29 ult: that the Period, mentioned in my Book of Instructions of 1811, for the transmission of my Legacy Receipts is the first Tuesday in each month.

I further beg leave to say that a Letter on this subject, was addressed to me on the 14 March last;3 and that in reply to my pg 24observations thereon, it was stated in your Letter of the 30 March, that it was now clearly settled in the order Book of the Office, that the first Tuesday in the month is the day on which I am to transmit my Legacy Receipts of Residuary Amounts, and that I must therefore continue to make my Return:—I presume, in consequence that your Letter of the 29 ult: has been inadvertently addressed to me.

  • I have the Honor to be,
  • Hon'ble Sirs,
  • Your obedient Servant
  • [signed] Wm Wordsworth

Editor’s Note
3 The Commissioners had written on 14 Mar. 1820: 'The regular period for your transmitting Legacy Receipts and Residuary Accounts to the Board is the fourth Tuesday in each month, therefore in consequence of the return which is not due until the 28 inst having been received on Friday last the 10 inst, I am directed to inform you that premature transmission causes as much irregularity in the business of the Legacy Department as those that are delayed. This being the case they desire that you will be punctual to the day fixed upon and not make your returns either before or after that period.' (P.R.O. MSS.). W. W.'s reply has not been traced.
