Mr Wises Land 19th June 1800

Mr Wise's Agent writes very angrily in regard to the delay2 but in conversation I had got him to accede to the idea of concurring in the choice of an Umpire in case of an irreconciliable disagreement between his Valuer and the Surveyor General. 'But to what purpose' (says he) 'think of an appeal when the Surveyor General will not so much as join in making the original valuation.'

There seems therefore no reason to apprehend a repugnance to the making the requisite abatement if the price asked should upon a fair examination prove to be excessive—He went so far as to say that Mr Wise desired no more than what would be a fair price from one Gentleman to another.
