I return you enclosed some papers of yours2 which you will probably wish to retain in your possession—I am sorry to say that I had destroyed a short note or Copy of a Note from Mr Rose to you3 which you requested me to return before your request4 arrived.

2 Probably the papers Bentham sent to Thornton on 12 May (letter 1328 n. 2). They may have included Bentham's letter to Neapean of 30 March 1794, on the draft of which there is an autograph note in red ink: '1798 or 99 / Returned by Henry Thornton by letter.' (See Correspondence, v. 22n.)
