To CHARLES HICKS, [?26 JANUARY 1839]*

MS Rosenbach Foundation. Date: Unusual formation of the "C" in signature points to Jan–Feb 39; probably 26 Jan, the day CD was Chairman at the Shakespeare Club dinner (see next). Reference in both letters to working late supports.

Doughty Street | Saturday Morning.

Dear Mr. Hicks.

I felt quite certain when I received your note last night, that there must be some mistake. However, it put me out of heart, and instead of sitting up and finishing as I should otherwise have done, I left off at 3 O'Clock this morning and went to bed.

I shall write 5 slips more in addition to what I now send, which will be amply sufficient. If you send up for them about 23 o'Clock, I have no doubt I shall have them ready for you.

When you send the proofs, be good enough to send a duplicate—never mind waiting until it's revised—I am obliged to go to a public dinner to-night, but if they arrive this evening or tomorrow morning, I will lose no time on their correction and return.

  •                                           Faithfully Yours
  • Mr. Hicks.                                      Charles Dickens
