My dear Spedding,

Many thanks for your friendly Letter, and kind compliance with my request.2

If you had now been at Mirehouse and had the Probate with you we could have easily prepared the Receipts in this off: but as you are in London it would probably suit yourself and the other Exrs to have the Forms filled up by your Solicitor there, and accordingly I have sent a supply by Coach (carriage paid), by the Union from Kendal to Leeds and thence by the Express. The Forms when filled up and executed by the Parties, viz. the Legatees and Exrs you will be so kind as to forward (together with the Forms—if any—that may not be required) to Wm Wordsworth, Stamp off. Carlisle. As soon as the Papers are so forwarded you will please to pay the Duty into the hands of Masterman and Co Lombard Street, for my account with Wakefield, and Sons Kendal.

Permit me to observe that the Act requires the duty to be paid within 21 days after Receipt of the Legacies, otherwise a penalty of 10 per cent will be incurred.

You will be sorry to hear that my poor Sister has long been in a languishing State, and is now confined to her bed with little or no hope of Recovery.

pg 587Pray present my kind remembrances to Mrs Spedding and believe me

  • dear Spedding
  • faithfully your obliged Friend
  • Wm Wordsworth

P.S. The Forms will be stamped in about six weeks after you forward them to Carlisle, and will be returned to you, as you may direct.—
