I have received a piece of intelligence, which in your eyes, and in those of your Secretary of State,² I should expect to find of some importance, and which you could scarcely receive, I think, or he about to receive, through any other channel. If it be agreable to you to receive it, I am at your service here at any time to communicate it.

There is little danger of my being from home: but a line from you would exclude it.

² Rush in fact forwarded two copies of Letter 2982 on 1 August 1823 not to the Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams, as Bentham had suggested, but to the President of the United States, James Monroe.
