Q.S.P. 20 May 1820

Madam

I have to acknowledge the favour of your's of the 18th.2 I have to regret the being prevented by business that could not wait from answering it by return of post.

I have likewise to regret the trouble I have given you. On a maturer consideration of the matter I find, that circumstances have so changed since I first cast my eye on the House in question, that the possession of it could not now afford any accommodation to me. I have not therefore given any trouble to the Gentleman you mention, Mr Ashmore, nor have I it in contemplation so to do.

I have the honour to be

                                        with all respect, Madam,

                                            your obedient Servant,

                                                Jeremy Bentham.
